This image is based on Wilford Woodruff’s journal drawing on January 28, 1844 (see second photo). On that day, he and his wife Phebe “receivd our . . . sealings.” You can see at the top of the drawing he wrote “Seal the hearts of the children to the fathers Malachi IV ch 6 vers.”
This drawing, however, was not only showing Wilford and Phebe’s eternal marriage sealing to each other, but also their connection into a network of kings and priests and queens and priestesses to God. Although Wilford didn’t give us an exact interpretation, the interlinked hearts surrounded by keys likely symbolizes their becoming part of the great priesthood family of God through the blessings of the holy sealing. If you count, there are 12 smaller hearts, with a larger 13th larger heart at the top, all connected into one great heart. This likely symbolizes the tribes of Israel, or maybe the Twelve Apostles. The larger heart at the top could be Joseph and Emma Smith, or Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob.
Through the blessings of sealing we become linked by priesthood power with our loved ones for eternity. We become part of a greater network of saint—the great “chain” of priesthood or “welding link” as Joseph Smith called it—interconnected
I hope when you see these intertwined hearts it speaks to your heart of the glorious blessings of eternal sealing of parents and children linked for generations into the great covenant priesthood family of God.
