Knowest thou the meaning of the tree of life?

This is what the Spirit of the Lord asked Nephi (see 1 Nephi 11:21), and it’s the same question asked for each of us.

The tree of life symbolizes the “love of God” (1 Nephi 11:22), and the greatest act of love by God was sending his son, Jesus Christ, to make an atoning sacrifice to redeem us all (see John 3:16; 15:13).

In other words, the tree of life is Jesus Christ and his divine condescension, atonement, and redeeming triumph for us.

In this image, I’ve followed a lesser-known Christian art tradition to show Jesus as the tree of life.  He hangs on the tree, symbolic of his crucifixion.

The joyous fruit of his redeeming love is offered in his outstretched hands.

It’s there for all.  For you.  For me.

Will we “partake of  his salvation” (2 Nephi 26:24)?

With divine charity, He invites us all to do so.

Let us come to the Tree of Life.
