The ultimate definition of the word “atonement” means to reconcile or to restore to harmony.  If we break the word down into three parts (at–one –ment) we can more clearly understand what is meant by the idea: to take that which was out of harmony and make it “at one” again or put in its proper, rightful, intended condition. Although we are imperfect mortals here on earth, through Christ’s divine sacrifice, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of his gospel we can be reconciled, redeemed, or restored “at-one” again with our perfect immortal Father in Heaven.  This is the essence of the gospel, the “good news.”

In these paintings I see a representation of this.  When the underpainting—each varied and unique like us as individuals—is brought together and pressed with the carved icon of Christ, the image combines to make it whole, complete, and at one. I hope this image and its creative process reminds of these truths.
